Why do we develop Gout?
Excessive levels of uric acid in the blood cause gout. We produce uric acid as a waste product from digesting protein. In a healthy person, uric acid is removed by the kidneys and excreted as a dilute solution (urine). But if your kidney function is impaired, the concentration rises to the point where it precipitates as monosodium urate crystals. These normally form in the joints of your toes, because your feet are cooler and cold temperatures reduce the solubility of uric acid. Gout is partly genetic, but exacerbated by excessive drinking – particularly beer – and not enough exercise.
